Many officials agree that middle school is a critical period in math education because the concepts become more challenging. Many students fall behind during these years, which can lead to further struggles in high school.
To combat this common trend, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) recently announced that it has donated $50,000 to a California-based school district, according to the Pacifica Patch. The fund will help strengthen a teacher training program for middle school math instructors.
A spokeswoman for the SVCF said that these research-based sessions aim to help teachers lead effective math lessons, specifically Algebra I. These training programs would also promote collaboration efforts between teachers, coaches and principals to reinforce these critical skills.
Many middle school educators are searching for new methods to engage students in math concepts, which many teens believe are outdated and useless. The nonprofit group SRI International recently praised a software product called SimCalc, which combines digital technology with a paper-based curriculum.
In a national pilot program, SRI researchers concluded that seventh- and eighth-grade students who utilized SimCalc outperformed children who did not use the software. |
