Federal funds to support technological upgrades in San Francisco schools

12/1/2010

Teachers in the San Francisco Unified School District will soon receive some new classroom toys, thanks to a federal grant.

The San Francisco Examiner reports that the district will receive $1 million, which will go toward the ninth grade initiative Plan Ahead. As part of an effort to better prepare teenagers for success in the 21st century, the funds will help "enhance data improvement systems," according to the California Department of Education.

Ninth grade teachers in San Francisco can expect new interactive projectors, laptops and document cameras.

“With the state budget crisis continuing, our cash-strapped schools desperately need these funds as soon as possible so they can use education data and technology to better prepare students for college or careers,” said Jack O'Connell, superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District.

The nonprofit group USA Funds donated more than $7.6 million toward scholarships and programs during the current academic year, as part of its efforts to help low-income and urban-based students prepare for college.

The organization established early awareness programs throughout the country, which helped advise middle school students and their families about the importance of a college education.
