High school students in Bay State have a nose for news

12/8/2010

Students in a Massachusetts high school are carrying on a tradition that has spanned generations providing relevant news to their peers.

According to the Taunton Daily Gazette, the school's student-run newspaper is so popular among students that its staff sells copies for $0.25 per issue. The publication, on average, sells about 300 copies per month, and some of the proceeds go toward the production of the school's annual literature magazine.

The newspaper's reporters cover issues that are of interest to the student body, such as bullying, pep rally plans and building renovations, the news provider reports. Worldly events are also written about, but from a teenager's perspective.

Teachers Julie Ferreira and Gary Walter are the paper's advisors. Ferreira has experience in the news industry, previously serving as a general assignment reporter for two radio stations in Rhode Island. The two teachers lead a reporting and writing class, which is available to seniors and juniors.

The Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, which is a team of student journalists between ages 10 and 14, recently named the most popular news stories of 2010. The earthquake in Haiti, the Gulf oil spill and U.S. education reform were among the most viewed stories on the group's website.
