More than 2,000 elementary education classrooms have been exposed to a chess program called First Move over the last decade. Organizers of the initiative have announced that they plan to expand it to an additional 30,000 students throughout the U.S. in 2011.
According to the St. Cloud Times, First Move was developed by America's Foundation for Chess in 2000. The program encourages teachers to expose their students to the game, which has been proven to help build critical thinking skills and confidence among kids.
An Education Northwest study in 2009 reveals that more than half of parents surveyed said that their children's grades improved after participating in First Move. Furthermore, approximately 62 percent of respondents reported that their children's attitude toward school improved after the program.
The news provider reported that, through chess, early childhood teachers can also help children turn negative situations into positives.
"I've been trying to teach them that when a player just has their king left and says, 'I'm going to lose,' I tell them, 'Not necessarily,'" one teacher told the media outlet said. "We focus on the best outcome we can get."
Meanwhile, a world chess champion is visiting school districts throughout America to relate the game to school achievement and positive decision-making. Orrin Hudson, who is a two-time World Open Speed Chess winner, has developed a philosophy called KASH (knowledge, attitude, skills and habits). |
