Lincoln Interactive, a virtual learning provider, has recently launched an origami course for middle school students that was created to utilize the techniques that are associated with paper folding to teach complex science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts.
The online class, which is entitled Investigation Paper Engineering, was designed by 15-year-old Calista Frederick-Jaskiewicz, a student at the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. The program was her entry in the 2010-2011 Young Ambassador project for the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, which is a foundation that offers services to K-12 students who score in the 99.9th percentile on IQ and achievement tests.
"Origami is a way for learners to discover the STEM possibilities that lie hidden within this ancient art," said Frederick-Jaskiewicz. "It empowers learners to think deeply, unleash imagination and become more motivated...Folding science is everywhere - from flapping cranes to human brains."
The Lincoln Interactive program comes with all the supplies that are necessary to begin practicing origami. In addition to the educational software components that make up the academic portion of the virtual course, tutorial videos, how-to guides, specialty papers and folding tools are also included. |
