This weekend, close to 125 high school science teachers and university students will attend Rocket University, a NASA space camp hosted at Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Undergraduates will take part in the organization's fourth annual RockOn! workshop, while the educators will participate in the Wallops Rocket Academy for Teachers and Students (WRATS).
Throughout the week-long program, attendees will be taught about rocket science and space experimentation by NASA engineers and researchers. The courses, which are co-hosted by the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia, will allow participants to experience how science works in zero-gravity.
In addition to the science-based curriculum, program attendees will have the opportunity to attend a NASA sounding rocket launch on June 23, when a 35-foot-tall ship will reach an altitude of more than 75 miles.
"This week will provide opportunities for students and educators to gain hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and math and expand our educational pipeline to bring students into STEM careers," said Joyce Winteron, the senior adviser for education and leadership development at Wallops Flight Facility. |
