Although Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will keep kids out of class next Monday, many teachers are bringing King's hopes and dreams into their classrooms.
For example, The Arizona Republic recently reported that Sequoia Elementary Charter School, which is based in the Grand Canyon State, is devoting next week to teach students about the importance of diversity. Beginning on Wednesday, early childhood teachers will hold discussions, essay contests and poetry readings - all of which will focus on tolerance of others, no matter what their race, ethnicity or religious denomination.
Next week's lessons will highlight some of the struggles that African Americans endured in America during the 20th century. Kristi Larson, a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher, told the media outlet that these past hardships are important to share with young students because they will have a better understanding of how much things have changed over the last 50 years.
According to the news provider, Larson's classroom has a group motto displayed on a wall, and it reads One Life, One World, One Tribe Take Pride.
Meanwhile, the Southern Poverty Law Center recently announced the release of the spring edition of Teaching Tolerance, a magazine that focuses on social justice. The new issue contains articles that examine how educators can use social media technology to promote tolerance and acceptance among diverse students. |
