Teachers who lead Advanced Placement (AP) courses should expect some significant changes in the coming years.
According to the International Business Times, AP courses such as biology and U.S. history will be completely revamped to address concerns from high school teachers. The College Board, which sponsors the AP program, was set to unveil some of the changes last month, but the announcement was pushed back another year so designers of the curricula can clarify some of the teachers' requests.
The news provider reported that the major complaint from instructors has been too much emphasis on memorization skills, rather than analytical thinking and application. The biology changes are expected to be implemented by the 2012-2013 academic year, and the U.S. history alterations will go into effect the following year.
AP courses are widely considered to be the equivalent of certain undergraduate college classes. Many institutions of higher education reward incoming freshman with transfer credits if they earn a 3 or higher on AP exams.
A recent report from the College Board reveals that about 500,000 public school students in the class of 2010 scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam in high school, which is double the amount from 2001. |
