As part of Global Hand Washing Day, a member of a community organization in New York made more than 15,000 bookmarks to encourage students to wash their hands more frequently.
According to the Ithaca Journal, Joe Cassaniti distributed bookmarks with hand washing tips printed on them. The suggestions included using plenty of hot water and soap, and scrubbing for the amount of time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday."
Cassaniti was inspired to start the initiative following last year's H1N1 pandemic, which got him thinking about the different ways kids can learn about germ prevention.
"Hand washing is one of the most important ways for staying healthy," he told the news provider.
Cassaniti consulted with the health centers and health departments to verify the effectiveness of his message. Their backing, he says, gives the bookmarks credibility.
A recent study reveals that the cafeteria table is the most germ-contaminated location in schools, and researchers believe that teachers and parents can help children eliminate bacteria buildup.
The study found that the cafeteria table, computer mouse, water fountain and bathroom sink faucets were among the germiest sites in schools. Teachers may offer alcohol-based hand wash or disinfectant wipes to their students in order to fight the spreading of germs. |
