A high school in Illinois hopes that a little bit of morbidity will go a long way in saving lives.
The Daily Republican reports that Johnston City High School held mock funerals last week for two seniors who, in a ficticious scenario, were killed in a car accident after being hit by teen who was texting and driving. A reverend addressed students about the dangers of drunk and distracting driving, which set a somber mood that was enhanced by two caskets, flowers and photos of the students.
The mock funeral was organized by the school's LifeSavers group, which kicked off Operation Teen Safe Driving Week. Other events throughout the week included drunk-driving goggle demonstrations, as well as speeches from family members of local victims who were killed by distracted drivers.
"A lot of times high school kids think they're invincible, that nothing will really happen to them," said Kathy Lilly, the adviser of LifeSavers. "If this saves one kid, it will be worth it."
Meanwhile, attorney Michael A DeMayo is offering college scholarships to North Carolina students who can best express ideas that can help prevent drinking and driving. The law firm will award approximately $35,000 to the best presentations, and the winning entries will be distributed to community leaders and state lawmakers. |
