Although many parts of the U.S. are enduring the deep freeze of winter, some schools are heading outdoors to get students involved in eco-friendly activities.
For example, the Palatka Daily News recently reported that a science teacher at Florida-based Palatka High School engaged his students in a tree-planting activity to celebrate the state's Arbor Day, which is recognized on the third Friday in January. Last week, students planted live oak trees at the entrances of several local school buildings.
The news provider reports that several local officials attended the ceremonies and commended the group of students for their efforts. Jeff Norton, the city parks director, presented the high school with a banner that recognizes Palatka with Tree City U.S.A. distinction. The county's forester handed out free seedlings to students who took part in the event.
Aside from helping to enhance the exterior landscape of local schools, students said that they also learned a lot about the important role that trees play in sustaining a healthy environment.
Meanwhile, the Game Commission in Pennsylvania has launched an initiative that will provide middle and high school students with free seedlings. The program, called Seedlings for Schools, is geared toward elementary schools. Interested schools can order either white pine or silky dogwood seedlings, which students can use to plant trees outside of their school, at home or within their communities. |
