Special education teachers and early childhood educators are always looking for new ways to engage their students. A new initiative called Flip This Classroom Learning Environments Matter offers one potential solution add some color.
According to Glen Ellyn News, three schools in the U.S. recently received makeovers for their reading classrooms, including the Glen Crest Middle School in Illinois. The major theme of the makeover was adding color to an environment that previously had bare, white walls as well as bland carpeting and furniture. The reading room now has green and blue walls, bean bag chairs, new carpeting and portable desks.
The middle school's teachers have already seen academic improvement since the classroom was "flipped."
"Since there’s more colors it makes it easier to learn for me. I don’t know why exactly, but it sort of makes me concentrate more," sixth-grade Kamil Pytka told the media outlet.
The initiative aims to improve learning environments by enhancing lighting, seating and temperature. Many schools in the U.S. have placed more emphasis on visual and aesthetic issues in class.
For example, one of the most visually stimulating toys on the market, the Rubik's Cube, is being introduced to students at K-12 schools throughout the nation. The campaign, which is called You Can Do The Rubik's Cube, aims to align the the puzzle's challenges with science, technology, engineering and mathematics lessons. |
