Schoolchildren and teachers in the city of Joplin, Missouri are preparing to return to the classroom, thanks to a merger of Emerson and Duquesne Elementary schools, according to Fox News.
The tornado that devastated the small Missouri town in May destroyed six of the district's 19 schools, including much of Emerson Elementary. The decision was made to merge the pupils and staff of Emerson with Duquesne, a few miles away. Schoolchildren and teachers alike were glad to have a school to attend at the beginning of the academic year.
"This is the school that love built," said Raye Frerer, a third grade early childhood teacher for more than 35 years, told the news outlet. "I get a little teary eyed because there's this song that's called 'Blessings' and says, 'What if your blessings come through tears-' and so, yes, that's what this is."
Meteorological experts said that the category five tornado which struck Joplin on May 22 was the ninth-deadliest tornado ever to hit the U.S. and the worst single twister since 1947, according to Reuters. |
