Children across America are learning that success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields can pay dividends.
For example, more than 400 high school students were recently selected to move onto the next round of the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. The challenge drew a record number of entries this year, totaling over 1,300 projects in individual and team categories.
Regional finalists will have the opportunity to win scholarships worth between $1,000 and $10,000. National finalists will compete for the top prize of $100,000 and international acclaim for reaching the pinnacle of STEM achievement at the high school level.
Earlier this week, President Barack Obama reaffirmed his mission to improve STEM education in the U.S. at the first-ever science fair at the White House, according to Chemical and Engineering News. Obama welcomed 75 award-winning students, who displayed their projects to a crowd of federal officials, educators and Nobel Prize winners.
"[Their work] is a testament to the potential that awaits when we inspire young people to take part in the scientific enterprise,” Obama said, quoted by the news source.
The President announced two initiatives at the fair, including a three-year, $14.2 million program to inspire students to study STEM subjects. |
