Gardening is typically not among the teaching requirements at most schools, but it may be an effective way to inspire kids to get active and eat healthy. It also may lead to the installation of a new school garden.
Annie's, which is a natural and organic food provider, has launched a contest called Root 4 Kids, which encourages K-12 teachers to educate their students about the benefits of planting vegetables. The school that accrues the most sign-ups between April 5 and May 31 will have the choice of a school garden or a new Farm to School program.
The Farm to School prize includes a variety of lesson plans and activities related to farming. Educators will work with a National Farm to School Network leader in order to develop the program, which may include farm field trips, garden sessions and a veggie-tasting session.
The goal of the initiative is to prompt one million kids to plant new vegetables through harvest 2011.
"With this contest, we're excited to help one school make this critical connection with a tangible program that encourages healthy eating habits," said Aimee Sands, marketing director for Annie's.
The Roots 4 Movement aims to address some of the most pressing health issues facing American schools, including childhood obesity and low-quality school lunches. |
