Teachers at a North Carolina elementary school recently taught classes in a winter wonderland.
According to ABC news affiliate WWAY, teachers brought their students into the institution's courtyard, providing them with a rare opportunity to learn about snow. Considering that the wintry flakes are rare in the Tar Heel State, a local member of the community used a snowmaking machine to spread snow across the school's campus.
"The teachers are going to incorporate snow lessons into their lesson plans for the day," the school's principal told the news provider.
Meanwhile, areas of the country that accumulate real snow are developing contingency plans for excessive school cancellations. According to Cincinnati.com, a school district in Ohio recently launched a pilot program that will allow students to take web-based courses when school is cancelled due to snow.
Schools officials hope that having students take at-home, online courses will help prevent the academic year from extending into the summer, which has occurred the last several years because of an abundance of snow days. The news provider reported that several obstacles must be addressed before the program is officially adopted, such as how to reach children who do not have Internet access in their homes. |
