Summer slide, the loss of learning over school vacation, is a phenomenon experienced by many K-12 students. In an effort to combat this issue, various educational publications and websites are working with teachers and parents to establish summer reading programs.
For example, Scholastic will launch its Summer Challenge on April 27, a program in which students will compete for the Read for the World Record prize by logging the amount of minutes they spend reading. PBS and iVillage will kick off their own Summer Reading Community Challenge on June 6, and will encourage participation by raffling off one $100 gift certificate each day.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, parents and teachers can have a significant effect on the success of these programs and the prevention of summer slide. Teachers, with the simple acts of going over summer reading expectations, providing educational materials and discussing realistic summer expectations with parents, can help students in both high school and elementary classrooms retain their knowledge over the summer months.
Addressing the issue of summer slide requires teachers, organizations and parents to work together to insure the prevention of learning loss over the summer and help students prepare for the upcoming school year. |
