Teachers of all grade levels, from elementary education to high school, will be taking part in Read Across America on March 2.
The annual event, which was created by the National Education Association (NEA), coincides with the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This is the 14th year of the initiative, which challenges educators, parents and students to devote a part of their day to reading.
The 2011 celebration will kick off at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, when First Lady Michelle Obama reads aloud the Dr. Seuss classic Green Eggs and Ham in front of hundreds of local school children. According to The Huffington Post, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, actress Jessica Alba and Super Bowl champion Donald Driver will also attend the event.
Next week, the reading celebration goes global as nonprofit organization LitWorld presents World Read Aloud Day on March 9. The group will host a 24-hour reading marathon in Times Square to honor the global initiative, which encourages children, teens and adults to read aloud with a group of people.
LitWorld reveals that schools and organizations in all 50 states and in 40 different countries will host events - such as poetry slams and international video chats - to celebrate the power of the written word. |
