High school students in Connecticut recently had an opportunity to assume the role of teachers during a public forum about energy efficiency.
Seven members of the school's Greener Impact Club, which was formed by a science teacher, conducted a demonstration on light-bulb efficiency, set up breakout sessions in classrooms throughout the school and explained the institution's new composting program. The event, which was open to all members of the community, was sponsored by an energy task force and an environmental conservation organization.
"These kids aren't just padding their resumes for college," said Dean Birdsall, the Greener Impact Club adviser. "They're involved because conservation is important to them."
Meanwhile, Johnson Controls, the global leader in delivering products that increase energy efficiency, has installed solar panels at a middle school in Utah. The installation was part of a statewide project titled Solar for Schools, which aims to teach students about the value of renewable energy.
The initiative, which is funded by a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, also provides scholastic resources into the K-12 curriculum throughout the Beehive State. Teachers are trained on the benefits of using energy that is generated by the sun, and then they may apply those concepts to their classroom lessons. |
