Most K-12 schools throughout the U.S. have endured difficult budget cuts in recent years. However, most third-world countries are struggling far worse when it comes to education funding.
Teachers may want to consider becoming involved in fundraising efforts to help impoverished countries. By participating in charitable events, educators can interact with their students and other members of the community in a non-classroom setting. In addition, as role models, they are showing kids that it is important to give back to individuals who are less fortunate.
For example, elementary education teachers in Pennsylvania recently played a group of parents in a game of basketball, with all proceeds going to the school system. The athletic event is just one in a series of charitable events to help raise money for the Kilimanjaro Education Foundation.
So far, the elementary school is on track to reach its fundraising goal of $10,000, which will be used to help build a new library in Tanzania. Furthermore, teachers will launch a pen pal program in which students can write letters to their counterparts in the African nation.
Although it is not a teaching requirement at most U.S. schools, educators can send a positive message to kids by organizing charitable events. |
