A school district in Wisconsin has expanded its efforts to bolster education by hiring a full-time literacy specialist.
According to the Herald Times Reporter, Carrie Sand serves as a coach for other instructors, helping them implement effective lesson plans. She observes classrooms, recommends a variety of activities and refers teachers to helpful resources, the news provider reported.
Sand, who was a seventh- and eighth-grade language arts teacher last year, is currently helping teachers implement a strategy called the Daily 5, which involves five literacy stations that kids rotate through during the week. The media outlet reported that the five stations are read to self, read with someone, word work, work on writing and listen to reading.
Eric Nelson, the principal at an elementary school that Sand works with, told the news source that it is worth it for schools to invest in a literacy specialist.
"It's the foundation for everything," said Nelson.
Meanwhile, the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) has released its annual rankings on the most literate cities in the U.S. The college measured locations on six criteria, including education attainment and library resources. Washington, DC, Seattle and Minneapolis were ranked in the top three. |
