Prompted by the fact that K-12 students are lagging behind their peers in other countries in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, many government agencies and private companies are launching initiatives to improve education in these subjects.
For example, aerospace company and aircraft manufacturer Boeing is hosting its 11th annual Educators to Space Camp program. More than 100 teaching professionals from museums, science centers and schools worldwide are expected to attend the workshop, which will take place next week.
The weeklong event is intended to help educators motivate students to pursue careers in STEM-related fields. Attendees will be briefed on current space exploration efforts to gain information that they may integrate into their lesson plans.
Company officials say that these training sessions are intended to help teachers produce students who will, one day, compose a highly skilled group of technical professionals.
In an effort to ensure the program reaches areas that demonstrate the highest need for STEM-related education, Boeing is providing full scholarships to teachers who work in regions where the company has a business presence or educational partnership. |
