| More than 8,000 teachers make the grade, recognized by national board |

The number of teachers who are certified by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has increased by more than 90 percent in the past five years. On Wednesday, the NBPTS announced that 8,600 more educators have been certified in 2010.
National Board Certifications are granted after teachers undergo a performance-based assessment that typically takes between one and three years to complete. Educators who qualify for the designation must demonstrate advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.
To date, more than 91,000 teachers have been certified, which is a significant increase from the 47,000 that were recognized by 2005.
Maryland's Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) utilizes the NBPTS standards when evaluating teachers' performances.
"It has kept our community's support, it has engaged our teachers, it has made a difference and it has made us what we are today," said Jerry Weast, superintendent of MCPS.
According to The Baltimore Sun, Maryland recently granted two schools with National Title I designation, which recognizes schools in high-poverty areas that score well on state tests. Principals from two Title I elementary schools gave credit to the teachers, who analyzed data in order to determine students' strengths and weaknesses. |
