A strong majority of Americans believe that teaching is the most noble of all the nation's occupations.
According to StrategyOne's The Value of Professions Survey, approximately 76 percent of Americans said that educators are "extremely valuable" to society, which is the highest percentage of all professions included in the survey. The poll, which was conducted in September 2010, asked more than 2,000 citizens about their opinions on certain occupations in America.
While teaching was considered the most valuable career to pursue in America, most people agreed that there is not a lot of wealth or power that accompanies jobs in the education industry.
"Choosing a meaningful profession is a challenge today for Americans at any age," said Catherine Reynolds, senior vice president of StrategyOne. "It becomes the difference between what feels good versus what looks good to others professionally."
According to the survey, nearly three-quarters of those who were questioned said that a valuable profession is one that improves people's quality of life. About two in five people said that giving back to the community was an important value of a valuable job in society.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the number of employment opportunities for kindergarten, elementary, middle and secondary school teachers will grow by 13 percent over the next eight years. |
