| Teacher gains recognition for work with blind students |

The National Federation of the Blind recently announced the winners of its annual Dr Jacob Bolotin Awards, which allocated cash prizes to six supporters of the blind community.
The program - which is intended to honor groups and individuals whose work advocates the integration of blind persons into society - recognized Alo Lovati, who teaches blind students. The educator received a $5,000 reward for his efforts.
In addition, a $15,000 prize was given to Ray Kurzweil, who has pushed for more access to print for the blind. Apple and online education company Blackboard also received $10,000 each for their blind-accessible products and services.
The awards were created in honor of Dr Jacob Bloutin, a blind physician who frequently advocated employment of blind persons until he died at the age of 36 years.
Marc Mauer, president of the National Federation of the Blind, said that the cash prizes are intended to encourage individuals and organizations who have laid the foundations for “a society where the blind are treated as productive, independent and equal citizens.” |
